Called OpenTripPlanner, the open-source application will offer a number of features that were not available in Google Maps. Directions can be made using different transit methods –- such as walking, biking, public transit and bike-share – and will find the fastest and efficient way to your destination. OpenTripPlanner will make its data and source code created as part of this project will be made available for free as open source so others can build on it. OpenPlans also plans to release a developer API that allows you to access the back-end trip planner as a hosted service.
